Ensign John Key served as an infantry officer in the Virginia Militia during the American Revolution, answering the call to defend the Commonwealth in its struggle for independence. 

Holding the junior commissioned rank of ensign, he was responsible for carrying his regiment’s colors, maintaining order among the troops, and leading soldiers in combat—duties that made the position both prestigious and perilous on the battlefield. 

His government-issued veteran’s marker was installed in 1926. Ensign Key represents the many citizen-soldiers whose courage and commitment helped secure America’s independence.
