The Reverend John Braidfoote was a Scottish-born Anglican minister who became an unlikely patriot during the American Revolution. 

After arriving in Virginia and assuming leadership of Portsmouth Parish (now Trinity Episcopal Church in Portsmouth), he found himself caught between loyalty to the British Crown and the growing movement for American independence. 

Convinced that the colonies fight was just, Braidfoote openly supported the Patriot cause and left his parish to serve as a chaplain in the Continental Army. 

Following the war, he returned to his ministry in Portsmouth Parish. 

John Braidfoote was one of the few Anglican clergy in Virginia who embraced the American Revolution and supported the cause for independence from the pulpit and the battlefield.
