Grant Stokes

Our Rector

After graduating seminary, I moved to the area and was ordained to the priesthood on Holy Cross Day, 2013. During my five-year tenure at a local parish I began to fall in love with this area and the people of this diocese. In 2017 I moved to Portsmouth and began to see the exciting things happening just down the street from my house at Trinity. I inquired with the Bishop’s office about a position and I am now the Rector here! Trinity is a wonderful parish and I am honored to serve here.

Priest Associate

Portsmouth is my hometown. Following my seminary education at Virginia Theological, I began my ordained ministry in the Allegheny mountains of Virginia where I served as Rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and Chaplain to Boys’ Home of Virginia. In 2009 I moved to Houston, Texas, to serve as a chaplain in St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital at the Medical Center.

Returning to Tidewater, I was called by Christ Episcopal Church in Smithfield to serve as their Priest in Charge. After my retirement, I was honored to be invited to join the staff of Trinity where I am Priest Associate for Pastoral Care. Many years ago, my life as an Episcopalian began in this community of faith where all are welcomed and recognized as children of God. I am overjoyed to call Portsmouth home and especially thankful to participate in the life of Trinity Episcopal Church.

Organist & Director of Music

It is indeed an honor to be your new Organist and Choirmaster at Trinity. As a Norfolk native, a music graduate of Old Dominion University, and Organist and Choirmaster at First Lutheran Church, I know of Trinity’s fine musical tradition. I received a Master of Sacred Music degree (cum laude) from New York’s Union Theological Seminary and while there, was a musical assistant at the iconic St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. Subsequently, in the Midwest I served First-Plymouth Church, the third largest UCC church in the country, followed by a position at First Presbyterian in Florida. I am delighted to return to the area of my roots and look forward to an exciting new challenge at Trinity Church.

Leadership Team

We are a group of people who strive to love the Lord our God and one another. We come from a variety of different backgrounds but what binds us together is our commitment to becoming better followers of Jesus Christ. As Episcopalians our worship is shaped by the Book of Common Prayer. We firmly hold that what we pray is what we believe, and this shapes how we live.
